Primary malignant tumours of the musculoskeletal system constitute about 6% of all malignancies. Primary malignant lesions of bone account for about 2% of all malignancies. The incidence of benign tumours, tumour-like lesions and bone metastases is still growing.
Information about musculoskeletal tumours in ancient times is chiefly available in pictorial form. Very little is known about the actual methods of management of such tumours. Later sources, dating mainly to the beginning of the 20th century point to amputation as a basic treatment method supplemented with oral intake of some herbal extracts e.g. the bracket fungus. Some of these „drugs” are still used in nonconventional medicine.
